TRC Congratulates The New State Smallbore Champions

|

The 2008 Smallbore State Champions are:

Standard Rifle - Antonio Lopez

Hunter Rifle - Joy Cox

ROCK-023-2.jpg

Eighty eight shooters from Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and Mexico attended the 2008 Arizona State Silhouette Rifle and Hunter Rifle Championships held at TUCSON RIFLE CLUB on October 4th and 5th.  High winds of 25 mph rocked everyone for the duration causing blinding dry dust, low overall scores and testing everyone's mettle!

Joy Cox of Phoenix, Arizona won the Hunter Rifle Championship easily with a score of 92 of possible 120.  She was also High Woman and High Arizona Resident!  Joy has proved a fierce competitor having won this event many times in years past.  She narrowly missed winning the Standard Rifle match by a mere 2 points!

Antonio Lopez is no stranger to wind!  Making the long trek from El Paso, Texas to Tucson, Arizona, he bested all comers with a respectable score of 89 of 120 to win the Standard Rifle Championship.  Antonio was joined by many of his fellow competitors from El Paso who also competed and shot well!  Match highlights follow:

2007 CMP Western Games and Creedmoor Cup

|

The 2007 CMP Western Games and Creedmoor Cup held at Phoenix's Ben Avery Shooting Facility are now history http://www.odcmp.org/1007/default.asp?page=WGAMES2.

As usual TRC made its presence known.

Even before any of the shooting started TRC had left its mark.  A crew of highpower shooters had prepared 210 targets and hauled them up to Ben Avery.  Each target bore the TRC stamp.  TRC also supplied half the rapidfire scoreboards and water coolers; each with a TRC decal.  Nearly half of the volunteer line and pit officials were from TRC.  Finally, there were the red TRC Highpower shirts worn by club members.  The combined effect was several out-of-state shooters said they thought that Ben Avery Range WAS Tucson Rifle Club!

When the Western Games were over and awards handed out TRC shooters just about did own the range.  Together they had won the John C Garand Match, placed Second in the Springfield Match (only one point shy of winning), posted the day's overall high score, and carried off almost 20% the achievement medals awarded in the two Garand Matches and the separate Springfield and Vintage Rifle Matches.  The winner and first place finisher among competitors eligible for EIC points in the Garand Excellence-In-Competition Match were also from TRC.

Tucson Smallbore Prone Results - September

|
The scores were as hot as the temperature at the September 9, 2007, smallbore prone match at Tucson Rifle Club. Four of the nine shooters exceeded a 1190 aggregate score. Lee McKinney, using a newly-purchased 2 inch Unertl scope, dropped only four points for the day and emerged the winner. Rick Smart trailed Lee by just one point, but shot more X's, 71, to Lee's 63. Greg Fallon led the X-counts with 85, but lost six points to end up third overall. Wow, that's 70% center shots! Bernice McKinney shot the only 40 shot "clean" of the day, 400-32x in the opening 50 yard match, but wore out with the heat to finish fourth, seven points down. Jim Denovchek thought he'd scoop the competition by using his scope, but found that after several months of iron sight shooting, his glass skills were a little rusty.
Maury Krupp, back from honing his skills at Camp Perry, led the iron sight group with some of the best scores he's ever shot, including a 396-20x at 50 yards. Junior shooter Nathan Abel squeezed continuous improvement out of a Club-issued Mossberg, finally beating Bill Reitze in the Dewar match at the end of the day. Looks like dad, Hal Abel, will be under a lot of pressure now to buy the kid a decent rifle (or surrender his Anschutz). Bill Reitze, meanwhile, has concluded that shooting in shirtsleeves is tough, and he's now shopping for a shooting coat.
All the scores are posted on the attached Excel spreadsheet. Our next match will be October 14, 2007. Greg Fallon Match Director
