Chip_Mate_2013_BPRS.JPGHosted by the Butte Gun Club on June 27 through 30 at the Rocker Gun Range near Butte, Montana, this four day event drew 76 competitors from many states including three shooters from Arizona. The match was divided into Scoped Black powder cartridge rifles and Iron sighted rifles. Over two hundred people were in attendance to watch!

Facing East the range gave competitors fits during the early morning relays! Twitchy wind conditions plagued all but a few shooters. Despite their home court advantage, long time shooters like Butch Ulsher and gun-writer shooter Mike Venturino did not fare well.

Three shooters from Arizona, Chip Mate Tucson Rifle Club, Steve Rhoades and Bob De La Torre from Phoenix with the Arizona Sharpshooters made the long drive to Butte to explain that Silhouette started in Arizona! Arizona shooters rose to the top! We shoot in wind her too, folks!

After the dust settled, the threesome from Arizona finished as follows:

Chip Mate* Iron Sights MATCH Winner/ State Champion score- 64 x 80

Bob De La Torre Iron Sights 3rd place Mstr class score- 52 x 80

Bob De La Torre Scoped Class 1st place Class AA score- 56 x 80

Steve Rhoades Scoped Class 2nd place Class AAA score- 56 x 80

*Chip Mate was Arizona State Black Powder Rifle Champ in 2012!

All competitors fired the standard forty round silhouette course including ten rounds at each of chickens (offhand) pigs, turkeys, and rams (sitting or prone). All rifles must be vintage pre-1900 era single shot rifles firing cartridges loaded with black powder topped by a lead alloy cast bullet with no gas check allowed. Scopes must be of an original turn of the century design with straight-tube of 7/8"diameter and low power factor. These competitors shot on Thursday and Friday. Iron sighted guns employ a tall rear peep sight graduated in elevation and windage to aim very accurately to or exceeding the 500 meter ram distance. These competitors shot on Friday and Saturday.

IHMSA Pistol Silhouette Match

|
We only had 4 shooters at the match, 2 were new to the this current match schedule.

Don drove from Arizona City to shoot and did very well. Don did not want the pins he won for 10 in a row on a couple of animal target's Chicken and Pigs.

I did okay but had a little problem with ammo! do not shoot old ammo, it cracks the brass! Lesson learned again!

Joe Robarts did his normal great job and talked to the Target Setters and they primarily are rifle people
but very interested. My ATV was well used and really cut down on the heat exposure and shooting time!

Thanks to all who came and shot and watched, see you all next month!

June Bowling Pin Match Report

|

Well, I've heard the expression "Won the whole shootin' match," but I've never actually done it.

Until today.

Seven other shooters showed up for the June Bowling Pin match. Two brought Major guns, four brought Minor guns, six brought revolvers, and six brought .22's. There were too few of us to break out Major vs. Minor, so we shot centerfire pistol as one class. There were a lot of malf's. Still, I managed to win all three divisions. (No malf's on my part, except for the loose nut behind the trigger.)

Note: Eight shots in the revolver class really helps. I only managed to clear a table in six shots or less twice. The rest of the time it took seven, and once it took all eight.

The next match is July 8. Hope to see you there.

Match Report - Mother's Day Pins

|

Six people besides myself showed up for the Mother's Day bowling pin match, two of them new, and one of those an actual mother. Welcome to Carlos and Elda, and I hope they can join us again. The seven of us brought twenty guns: four Major, six Minor, five revolvers and five .22's.

I managed to win both Major, with my Kimber Classic, and Minor with my M&P. John Higgins won Revolver with his S&W model 19 shooting .38's (with pinpoint accuracy), and Jim Burnett won .22 in a come-from behind victory, cleaning my clock in four straight strings. It took him a little while to find his "A" game, but when he did, there was no beating him.

The next match is Sunday, June 10 - NOT a holiday. Hope you can join us.

It has been brought to my attention that the second Sunday, April 8, is Easter Sunday.

Consequently, the Bowling Pin Match scheduled that day won't be occurring.

Sorry about this.

Thanks.
