Eleven shooters showed up for the match of all different skill levels.  It was hot, but generally breezy enough to keep us not too uncomfortable.  Handguns ranged from a S&W Model 10 to an STI .40S&W race gun.  Everyone got to shoot a LOT, and (I think) had a very good time.  Many pins gave their all in this competition.  I know my tables did.  I need new ones.  In addition to the five initial timed runs for handicapping, the ultimate winner competed in six head-to-head matchups.  Some shooters actually ran out of ammo!  (Next time they'll bring more, they say!)  The ultimate winner was 15 year-old Woody Simpson shooting a SIG, which goes to show that old age, guile and experience doesn't always defeat youth and enthusiasm. Woody's very last round of ammo took his very last pin off the last table of the day.  To add insult to injury, he won the drawing at the end of the match and took home the prize money ($12) to go along with the shot-up trophy pin.

The next match is August 8.  There will be no match in September, as I will be going to the Gun Blogger Rendezvous in Reno, NV that weekend.

Tucson Rifle Club's monthly John C Garand Match will be held this coming Sunday 16 May 10.
 
Range gate opens around 0630.  Squadding starts on the 200yd line after the pits are set up.  First round downrange at 0700.
 
Match fee is $10 for adults; juniors and military shoot for free.
 
Ammunition is available for use in the match; $20 for seven clips (56 rounds) of HXP M2 Ball in a cloth bandolier.
 
Several privately-owned rifles are available for loan free of charge.  Club ammo must be purchased and used.  Contact me if you need one.
 
Reduced targets to simulate the standard National Match Course are available on request.  Ask for them when squadding.

Madison, NC - Remington Arms Company, Inc. would like to congratulate Tyler Rico on his recent victory at the Nevada Regional High-Power Rifle Championship held on February 13, 2010. Rico scored an incredible 791-26X to be awarded the overall Open Winner match rifle champion while also securing High Master Class and NRA Junior Class titles at the recent Boulder City event.

This NRA-sanctioned match, held at the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club, is one of many competitive events conducted throughout the year with individual winners qualifying for the National Championships held at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. Rico secured his win by completing the four-stage course of fire that included 20 shots standing at 200 yards; 20 shots sitting at 200 yards; 20 shots from the prone position at 300 yards; and 20 shots from the prone position at 600 yards.

Rico, age 15, is a former Junior National High-Power Rifle Champion. He and his father, Cecil Rico, joined the Remington High-Power Rifle Team in October 2009, and reside in Tucson, Arizona.

Remington congratulates Tyler on his wins and wishes him continued success in upcoming shooting competitions!

"Flowing Wells High School's JROTC Rifle Team finally owns a state title.

The award had eluded the rifle team for a decade, but that changed when Flowing Wells  prevailed over 11 teams at the state championship Saturday at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix.

"We weren't shooting as well as we had been shooting, but the kids pulled together at the end," said retired Maj. Bob De Witt, Army JROTC instructor at Flowing Wells. "They got the job done."

As was the case last year, TRC will not be sponsoring any teams.  But that doesn't mean we won't be putting teams together.

This year each team will have to make its own entry, pay its own way, etc, etc.

So...

If you're already part of a four shooter team you should get your entry in ASAP.

If your team is short one or more shooters reply to this email so we can see who needs what.

If you're by yourself and want to find three other shooters reply to this email and we can try to fill gaps or put together complete teams.

If you know of someone who wants to be on a team but may not receive this notice tell them to contact me.

If you're part of the "M1 For Vets" and want to put together a team let me know.  Last year the match sponsors comp'ed all vet entries; I'm sure they'll do the same this year.  Or if you want to shoot on a TRC Team we'll be glad to have you.

Poole says there will be room for 80 teams but you never know.  It will behoove us to get our act together and our team entries in as soon as we're able.

Match fees for adults are: NRA Match $15; Practice Match $10.  Juniors shoot both matches for free.

We waited a whole year for an Arizona resident to win the Arizona State Championship only to be robbed once again!


I guess when you have one of the finest ranges in the United States, located in an area that has awesome weather in the winter time, you are going to get a bunch of folks jumping at the chance to get out of the cold for a week and do some shooting.


Once again the "snowbirds" denied the locals from winning the Arizona State Scope Championship.

There are so many stories to tell about this years Arizona State BPCR Silhouette Championships that I don't know where to start.


I guess the best thing to do is start with who is the 2009 Arizona State Champion.

Surprise, it's NOT Mike Rix!!


Butch Ulsher made the trip from Montana with his shooting partner Mark Griffis and worked his way back into the winners circle by putting together back to back 32X40s to secure the match win.


Saturday was smooth sailing with almost perfect weather conditions and the scores showed it but Sunday morning greeted everyone with gusting winds and chilly temperatures by Arizona standards. Most thought this was going to be a repeat of last year with the strong north winds blowing the targets down but by the end of the first relay everything was back to normal and the wind flags were hanging limp on their poles.


Keeping Butch honest were three Arizona shooters. Ron Calderone, Chip Mate and Jerry Cambern all had their eyes on the "Cactus Trophy" and the first ever Arizona resident win, but Butch is at his best when the competition is tough. Although he gave up the Sunday match win to Ron he managed to secure the overall championship with an aggregate score of 64X80.

On Dec. 5, Flowing Wells High School JROTC buried five years of second-place frustration with a resounding win over the previously unbeaten Tuba City High School rifle team.

It capped off a nationally sanctioned match in which the top six JROTC rifle teams in Arizona -- from outside the Phoenix metro area -- converged on the Flowing Wells campus for a regional championship.

The other teams were from Buena, Dysart and Marcos de Niza high schools and Hopi Junior/Senior High School.

Teams were selected for the match based on a cumulative scoring of five previous state matches involving 12 high schools.

After the day's final shot, Flowing Wells JROTC members Tyler Rico (yep, TRC's own Tyler Rico!), Brett Coldron, Rudy Teyechea and Cody Larger had respectively taken first, third, fourth and fifth place.

The awards ceremony began with Arizona Friends of the NRA granting the $2,400 to the Flowing Wells JROTC program.

The Flowing Wells score of 2,149 is a school and state record. The team is headed to the state championship match Jan. 16 in Phoenix and hopes to move on to the national championships in March.
